Happy #SweetheartSunday! Kali (Waters) Cushing ’07 married Ethan Cushing ’07 on October 25, 2009 in Boise, Idaho. The couple met at Chapman Bible Study. Their love story according to Kali: “Ethan was new to California when he started film school at Chapman. He met an undergrad named Kali at a Chapman Bible Study group. He thought she was beautiful and smart and funny, but unfortunately, she was seeing a different student at the time. They became friends instead, and after that, other guy broke up with Kali. Ethan finally got up the nerve to ask her out. She said yes and they dated for three years before getting engaged.” Alumni in the wedding party included Bonnie Coil ’07 and Molly Glynn ’06.

WORDS OF A STUDENT: Andrea Kerndt '18 "Thank you to all those who donate time, effort and funds to make our University into the remarkable place that it is. Not only is Chapman an outstanding education, a place to learn by experience, an environment that fosters growth and enrichment, and a home away from home for me and so many others—it is also the backdrop to an entire chapter of my life, one that I will never forget, and will always look back on with a smile." Before coming to Chapman I was very shy and reserved. I didn't like to dance or be in front of people because I was scared or embarrassed. Upon coming to Chapman I chose to open up more and not be afraid to try new things. Saying "yes" to these new experiences and opportunities that the Chapman community provided proved to be a ton of fun! Now every time I am presented with a chance to sit back or be in the moment I take it. I realized I missed out on a lot of great memories by sitting back and I recommend everyone to say "yes" to those possibly "out of your comfort zone" experiences. It's totally worth it! Plus, we all look silly so have fun with it!

Last Monday night, we celebrated in our Leatherby Libraries the publication of Chapman’s Richard Bausch’s new book, “Before, During, After.” It’s getting rave reviews from around the nation, including The New York Times. We are so fortunate (especially our students) to have one of the truly great novelists and short story writers as part of our Chapman community. In addition to being a phenomenal writer, he’s also a great guy. If you haven’t met him, do so. Richard is yet one more reason that the intellectual environment at Chapman is so vibrant, exciting and stimulating. JLD Here’s a photo of Richard with a celebratory cake in the foreground. The book looks good enough to eat.

Chapman celebrated its biggest and best Family Homecoming this weekend. While I was walking or running in the Chapman-Toyota 5k having a lot of fun, we had an incredible group of volunteers and Chapman community members who led the charge. Attending were 500 alumni, 1350 Moms and Dads, 1000 students and 150 faculty and staff. Special kudos to Sheryl Bourgeois and her team leaders that include Andi Doddridge, Guy Hinrichs, Kim Greenhall and Brady Hogan. I also wish to thank Armando Diaz and his team, facilities, set-up crew, Sodexo and also all the Chili contestants. Congrats to Coach Bob Owens and our Panther football team for ending the weekend on a high note. Check out the photos to get a sampling of the fun. JLD

WORDS OF A STUDENT: Spencer Berry '15 "It was the act of a donor who contributed to my education that enabled me to subsidize the travel course Business Across Cultures Vietnam. This course took me to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, Vietnam to meet international businesses and experience the cultural differences between the west and the east. This trip expanded my perspective on international business and put me outside of my comfort zone. I know that I will graduate from Chapman University as a global citizen because of donor investment in my life." WORDS OF A STUDENT: Michaela McLeod '18 "I would like to thank all donors very, very much, because without you I wouldn't be able to be pursing my passion for film. The scholarships that have let me be here at Chapman today mean the world to me, and every day that I go to class I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to continue my education. The professors that I learn from not only want me to excel, but they themselves excel as leaders, mentors and friends. Without the help from you all, I wouldn't be here today, learning, growing and thriving at such an amazing university." Chapman MBA

Featured Chapman MBA student Jonathan Hirsch: "Last spring I had the pleasure of interning for Lionsgate's home entertainment division. While there, I got an inside look on how a major studio predicts sales of packaged media (DVD & Blu-Rays) and revenue streams. I also was introduced to relatively newer forms of revenue streams like IVOD, VOD and SVOD, which are starting to replace tangible discs. The majority of my responsibilities revolved around quantitative analysis and pulled heavily from my statistics and business analytics courses. If there’s any word of advice I can give, it would be to practice excel enough to the point you rarely have to use the mouse. And make sure to find a great mentor while you’re interning. I was lucky enough to have Chapman Alum, Akin Ceylan." Thank you Jonathan and good luck on your professional journey! #ChapmanMBA #OurStudents #SummerInternship

Chapman University - Marriage & Family Therapy Program
April 12, 2016
Meeting Monica Crater (Class of 2017) and hear about her experience in the MFT program at Chapman University . . . "Through my experience in the MFT program at Chapman University, I have not only learned the skills to become a skilled therapist, but I have also learned more about myself to grow as a clinician. Growing up, I knew I wanted to be in a career related to mental health, and becoming a student at Chapman has allowed my dreams to become reality. My professors have truly guided me and pushed me in a positive way. Being an MFT Trainee at the Frances Smith Center allows me to apply my knowledge and be supervised by professors that want me to succeed and be a great therapist. As graduation quickly approaches, I know I am gaining invaluable support and tools to take with me into the real world to realize my dream of being a mental health professional."
