Chet (ח) is for Hanukkah (חנוכה) Hanukkah is the Jewish festival of Lights. Although it is actually a minor holiday, Hanukkah has gained the most widespread familiarity among non-Jewish people. The holiday lasts for eight days and nights, and commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem during the Maccabean Revolt against the Greek Seleucid Empire in the second century CE. It is celebrated yearly according to the Hebrew calendar, falling anywhere between late November and late December on the Gregorian calendar. This image is taken from Teraoka’s series “31 Flavors Invading Japan.” Although Teraoka paints with beautiful balance and precision, the underlying commentary is of sexual tension and destructive consumerism. Here, the cone is labeled with the Japanese character for “dare,” which means “who” or “whose”. When coupled with the fact that “drip” is also pronounced as “dare” in Japanese, one starts to unfold the layers of meaning and hidden power struggle. Images of Christ lie at the heart of icon veneration, as the visible manifestation of his human nature. Icons of Christ Pantocrator (“Christ All-powerful”) and the Savior Not Made by Hands are among the most frequently encountered. The festival icons that represent the 12 major episodes of Jesus’s life occupy the central row in the sanctuary screen (iconostasis) of every Orthodox church, while the Deisis (Christ flanked by Mary and John the Baptist) marks the focal point of the worshipper’s prayers. Samech (ס) is for dreidel (סביבון). Dreidels are a type of spinning top used to play a special game during the Hanukkah season. A dreidel has four sides, each with a Hebrew letter written on the surface. These letters are Shin (ש), Hey (ה), Gimmel (ג), and Nun (נ) and together, form an acronym for the phrase, “a great miracle occurred there” in Hebrew- referring to the miracle of the oil in Jerusalem that Hanukkah is based around Michael Hafftka “Samech” Watercolor on paper, 2007 Gift of the artist #michaelhafftka #hanukkah #jewishart #happyhanukkah #chanukkah #fineart #instaart #contemporaryart #watercolor #chapmanuniversity #chapmanu #escalettecollection

Photographer Shai Kremer is best known for his series "Infected Landscape." The series captures the impact that war has had on Israel; an important topic for Kremer, who is an Israeli himself- "In 1999, I started photographing this ominous imprint of the military on the Israeli landscape - and reflectively, on Israeli society. My images mirror the psychological trauma and resulting ambivalence of living in a world of friction, and they also warn against vestiges of warfare becoming a permanent fixture in people's lives." Although not of Asian descent himself, Jack Laycox was inspired by the brilliant colors and fanfare of the Chinese New Year celebration in Chinatown, San Francisco. He painted this watercolor work in a “wet-into-wet” style, which involved soaking the paper before applying the watercolor pigment. This created the blurred lines and forms that make this image so striking. This work is currently on display at the Hilbert Museum.
