Meet Chapman MFT alumnus, Dr. Ashleigh Louis, Ph.D., LMFT (Class of 2007) and hear about her memories and experiences in the Chapman MFT program and Frances Smith Center . . . "One of the things I appreciated most about attending Chapman University’s MFT program was the emphasis placed on understanding the research literature that supports various aspects of the therapeutic process. Another fantastic aspect of my experience in the program was having the opportunity to hone my clinical skills at the on-site community clinic, known as the Frances Smith Center. All of our supervisors were highly knowledgeable about a number of theoretical orientations and were supportive of our developing therapeutic approaches. In my time at Chapman, I found myself increasingly drawn towards Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), both through our academic/clinic experiences as well as through my role as a research assistant for Dr. Georg Eifert. I was afforded the opportunity of publishing two articles with Dr. Eifert, and also served as an informal editor for his Act on Anxiety Workbook. Immediately upon learning about ACT, I felt a deep connection with the tenants of mindfulness and the view of the self as the primary agent of change. As a therapist at Cypress College, I have utilized ACT quite a bit and have been pleased to find that students respond well to the ACT metaphors and exercises."
