Last week, I took a trip to Las Vegas. It wasn’t to gamble (as statistician, I know how the odds are stacked), but to take 3 days of bowl-turning classes with Jimmy Clewes, arguably the leading guru in the world of bowl turners. It was a class limited to only four students, and I was lucky to be one of them. Imagine my surprise when I parked my car in front of Jimmy’s woodshop and saw a Mini Cooper in front of mine with a “Chapman Mom” sticker displayed on the back window. When I walked into Jimmy’s woodshop, I met Ron Sahli from Riverside who was wearing a Chapman t-shirt. Turns out that Ron is the proud parent of Matt Sahli, a new freshman at Chapman. During the following three days, Ron and my two other fellow students and I were incredibly fortunate to be under the tutelage of Jimmy Clewes. What an incredible teacher! I would have been very happy to finish one bowl. Instead, I completed two bowls and one large platter. Jimmy even gave me rare pieces of mesquite, claro walnut and ambrosia maple for my “creations.” To accomplish all of this was especially amazing given the fact that rather than focusing my attention on turning bowls, I kept trying to figure out the statistical probability of having a Chapman parent as a fellow student.
