Chapman University - Schmid College

Schmid College was well represented at the Student Leadership Awards this afternoon! So well represented, in fact, that many of our awesome leaders aren't even featured in these photos. We'd like to take a moment to recognize three seniors who won amazingly high honors. Congratulations to Taryn Miyake, who won the Huntington Award for Outstanding Leadership, Sara Wanous, who won the Gloria and Julia Peterson Award, and Taylor Patti, who won the Chapman's highest student honor the Cheverton Award! We're so proud of all our Chapman science leaders (and glad they have a good sense of humor as well)! Read about ALL the Schmid College students honored here: https://blogs.chapman.edu/scst/2017/05/05/schmid-college-students-take-top-honors-at-2017-campus-leadership-awards/

Good morning, Panthers! I'm excited to introduce myself and my Chapman Sweetheart of a husband Zech - who I also wrangled into sharing his alumni life with you this week. My name is Sheri, and I graduated with my B.A. in Dance '11 and M.A. in Leadership Development '15 - and Zech graduated with his B.S. in Biological Sciences '10. We met in 2008, thanks to a small world, mutual friends and Greek Life (not a surprise to you, I'm sure!). This October, we road-tripped back for Chapman Homecoming (pictured ^) and realized it was 7 years ago that weekend we met on the old Argyros Forum Patio that no longer exists (we feel old). We're excited to share more of #MyLifeAtCU and beyond this week!

Michael Hafftka “Haqdamat Sefer Ha Zohar” Watercolor, ink, and pencil on paper, 2009 Gift of the artist Hanukkah begins tonight, and we are recognizing these next eight days and nights with works from a series by Michael Hafftka. As the son of two Jewish Holocaust survivors, Hafftka’s art reflects his resulting experiences and feelings. His work is centered on explorations of his faith and relationship with God, while also dealing with human suffering, and how faith can be maintained in its wake. The works are typically figurative, done in a hurried and spontaneous style with either oil or watercolor. This particular series features works based on the Hebrew alphabet, and we will be releasing one image a day until Hanukkah is over. #hanukkah #michaelhafftka #jewishart #art #contemporaryart #contemporary #chapmanu #chapmanuniversity #escalettecollection #watercolor #watercoloronpaper

Here I am with my former student and Chapman grad '96. We're celebrating the opening of il Barrone's Bottega - a new Italian deli just a few doors from the best Italuan restaurant in the nation - il Barrone. Last week I gave Franco Barone (head chef and owner with beautiful wife Donatella) a jar of my homemade fig and peach butter for his birthday. Franco surprised me at the opening with "Doti's Fig Cookies" which he made with my fig and peach butter as filling. So be sure to ask for Doti's Fig Cookies when you visit il Barone Bottega. The cannoli are fabulous too! Btw, Barone's is where a lot of Chapman's big deals are made. After some great Italian food, my lunch guests can't wait to give to our favorite university. JLD

UP NEXT on the Waltmar Theatre stage is Tom Stoppard’s modern masterpiece "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead." Also part of Chapman University's Shakespeare Reimagined program, this fabulously inventive tale of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" drama is told from the worm's-eye view of the bewildered Rosencrantz and Guildenstern characters, Hamlet's treacherous friends in the play. Tom Stoppard gives the stage to these two characters, but when they finally get a chance to take the leading roles, reality and illusion intermix, and our two heroes comically and tragically find their way to an inevitable end. WHEN: April 9-11 and 16-18 at 7:30 pm; and April 18 at 2:00 pm in the Waltmar Theatre. For tickets visit chapman.edu/tickets.

For “Throwback Thursday,” here I am with Guy Fox on the site of what would become Liberty Plaza where our “slice” of the Berlin Wall now resides. When the Mayor of Berlin called to tell me that they agreed to my request for Chapman to have a wall segment, I was also told that we would have to pay for shipping the 8k pound wall to Chapman. I opened the yellow pages (Google of the 20th century) and found a firm named Global Transport. The CEO, Guy Fox, answered my call and was so moved by getting a piece of the wall, he agreed to ship it for us at no cost. Notice the smile on my face! JLD
