Mem (מ) is for Maccabee (מכבי). The Maccabees were a group of Jewish rebels who refused to worship the Greek gods as mandated by their Seleucid rulers. Through guerilla tactics, the Maccabees were able to gain victory over the Seleucid army and retake Jerusalem. The timely death of the Seleucid Emperor Antiochus IV stalled a second campaign against the Maccabees, who were able to capitalize on the situation and negotiate for their religious freedom. It is this struggle for religious freedom, rather than the military victory, that is central to the celebration of Hanukkah. Today is the last day of Día de los Muertos. We're recognizing it with this work by artist Ruby Osorio, who studied art at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico after receiving a degree in Sociology at UCLA. Afterwards, she was awarded a residency in Japan and studied art abroad there in 2005. The majority of Osorio's work revolves around the idea of playing with "feminine aesthetic." "Dual Nature" depicts the profile of a woman, but much more prominently features a skull facing the viewer, juxtaposing beauty with darkness. The duality of this piece is both beautiful and terrifying; a reminder that death is inherent to the nature of life. #diadelosmuertos #skull #contemporaryart #contemporary #art #rubyosorio #dualnature #chapmanuniversity #chapmanu #escalettecollection

San Francisco’s Chinatown is built around Grant Avenue, which is depicted here by painter Jack Laycox. Chinese immigrants have faced a turbulent history in the United States; discriminatory laws prevented them from marrying non-Chinese, to vote, and they are the only ethnic group to have been specifically denied entrance to this country. However, times have changed. In 2015, the Chinese became the largest single immigrant group to the U.S. It will be interesting to observe how the cultures will continue to blend. You might even watch it happen yourself and visit Grant Avenue- just as Jack Laycox did half a decade ago.
