Mem (מ) is for Maccabee (מכבי). The Maccabees were a group of Jewish rebels who refused to worship the Greek gods as mandated by their Seleucid rulers. Through guerilla tactics, the Maccabees were able to gain victory over the Seleucid army and retake Jerusalem. The timely death of the Seleucid Emperor Antiochus IV stalled a second campaign against the Maccabees, who were able to capitalize on the situation and negotiate for their religious freedom. It is this struggle for religious freedom, rather than the military victory, that is central to the celebration of Hanukkah. My name is Evan Graham and I graduated from Chapman in May 2015 with a B.A. in Spanish and a Minor in History. I currently work as a Flight Instructor teaching flying lessons out of the Santa Monica Airport. On September 24th I will be taking the LSAT exam and applying to law schools to begin law school in September 2017. My major in Spanish has been very useful to me in that it has dramatically increased both my confidence and ability to communicate with Spanish speakers here in California and in Mexico when I visit my family there. The Spanish fluency I acquired at Chapman will undoubtedly be an invaluable skill for my future career in law as well.

Chapman University Internationals
May 13, 2016
Become an International Student Ambassador for Fall 2016! International Student Services is looking for volunteers who can assist with the adjustment of new international students during their transition from their home countries / previous schools to Chapman. Your service as an ambassador will play a major role in welcoming new international students. Ambassadors are volunteers who connect with incoming Fall 2016 students and help them by answering questions they may have about making the transition. Once we have all ambassadors signed up, we will send a list of all the ambassadors to new international students. They will select one ambassador and request his/her contact information to our office. You will be receiving email from your mentees around June. You may have multiple mentees but after you have three, your name will be taken off the list. If you are interested, email Junko at takada@chapman.edu. Thank you!!!

Chapman University - Marriage & Family Therapy Program
April 8, 2016
Meet Crystal de la Riva (Class of 2017) and hear about her experience in the Marriage & Family Therapy Program at Chapman University . . . "As far back as I can remember I have always wanted to pursue a career that centered on helping others. It was for this very reason I decided to attend Chapman’s MFT Program. Prior to beginning my coursework in the program I anticipated learning the skills necessary to be an effective therapist assisting those in need as I had always imagined. What I did not expect was to develop a sense of community amongst future colleagues, both student and faculty, each rich with ideas and approaches that have continuously broadened my own understanding of the field. As I continue my final year of the program I am able to reflect on not only the amalgamation of skills and resources that I have acquired thus far, but also the immense growth I have witnessed in myself and those around me."

Today is the last day of Día de los Muertos. We're recognizing it with this work by artist Ruby Osorio, who studied art at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico after receiving a degree in Sociology at UCLA. Afterwards, she was awarded a residency in Japan and studied art abroad there in 2005. The majority of Osorio's work revolves around the idea of playing with "feminine aesthetic." "Dual Nature" depicts the profile of a woman, but much more prominently features a skull facing the viewer, juxtaposing beauty with darkness. The duality of this piece is both beautiful and terrifying; a reminder that death is inherent to the nature of life. #diadelosmuertos #skull #contemporaryart #contemporary #art #rubyosorio #dualnature #chapmanuniversity #chapmanu #escalettecollection

San Francisco’s Chinatown is built around Grant Avenue, which is depicted here by painter Jack Laycox. Chinese immigrants have faced a turbulent history in the United States; discriminatory laws prevented them from marrying non-Chinese, to vote, and they are the only ethnic group to have been specifically denied entrance to this country. However, times have changed. In 2015, the Chinese became the largest single immigrant group to the U.S. It will be interesting to observe how the cultures will continue to blend. You might even watch it happen yourself and visit Grant Avenue- just as Jack Laycox did half a decade ago.
