Chapman University - Marriage & Family Therapy Program
November 18, 2016
Meet Sarah Douglas, MA, LMFT, Adjunct Faculty/Clinical Supervisor in the MFT Program at Chapman University . . . "When I began the Marriage and Family Therapy program at Chapman 10 years ago I never could have imagined a career as fulfilling and rewarding as the one I have today. My interest in working with the veteran population began soon after graduating from Chapman and is still strong today. I have worked at the Veteran Affairs Healthcare System for 7 years helping female veterans recover from life altering, service related traumatic events I feel honored to work with such brave and courageous women who are committed to having a life worth living. I have learned a lot from working with such a diverse population and I believe this makes me a better clinician and supervisor. While I find my clinical work rewarding, my role as clinical supervisor at Chapman University is equally rewarding. There are certainly many important aspects to cover in providing supervision. However, one that I am particularly passionate about and emphasize in my work with trainees is self of the therapist. I aim to help trainees develop a better understanding of themselves, revealing their unique gifts as individuals so that they can use these in their work with clients. I believe knowledge of self is crucial to building authentic and genuine relationships with clients, and it is ultimately these relationships that are the foundation to healing and recovery. In sum, I feel incredibly fortunate to work with burgeoning clinicians willing to learn not only the tools of the trade, but to learn about the most important tool which is themselves."
