Summit Internship Program -- Last semester the Student Life Committee of the Board of Trustees collaborated with the Career Development Center and local companies to create a special internship opportunity called the Summit Internship Program. The Summit Internship Program is separate from our regular internship opportunities and contains two components: o Summit Internship – First American Corporation, Paramount Pictures, Paycom, and other great companies will be offering high-quality, full-time internships in Summer 2015 for those Chapman students selected. o Summit Career Institute – Students in this program will participate in a special Institute on professionalism in the workplace; this 8-session Institute will train students on professional interviewing, workplace expectations, and how to interact with professional colleagues. Sessions will be led by successful local executives, many of whom are Chapman alumni. Participation in the Summit Career Institute is required to apply for most Summit Internships. The first spring Institute session will be Wednesday, March 4, at 7pm. Seats in the Institute are limited, and because many companies are specifically seeking juniors or seniors, preference will be given to students with 60 or more credits; sophomores and freshmen will be accepted as space allows. For more information or to sign up, contact Sally Jafari at jafari@chapman.edu.

Chapman University's Office of the President
September 28, 2015
At today’s meeting of the Board of Trustees, I announced my intention to step down as president, effective August 31, 2016. While I still love my job, I think it’s time for a change. I’m delighted that Daniele Struppa will become Chapman’s 13th president. I have great confidence in Daniele’s vision and his leadership skills, all of which have been recognized by the faculty and the Board of Trustees who formally endorsed him as president designate. The succession plan also involves identifying and appointing a new chief academic officer. In consultation with Faculty Senate President Cris Giannantonio, we have determined the structure of the search committee, which will include trustees, faculty, staff and an academic dean. The membership of the committee will be announced soon. We have also made the decision to have Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates help us with our search. It hardly seems possible that almost 25 years have passed since the Board of Trustees invited me to serve as Chapman’s president. We have accomplished a great deal working together. But we must, and I am confident we will, continue to make our university’s intellectual environment ever more vibrant, exciting and trendsetting. During this last year of my presidency, I am particularly excited about the opening of the Marybelle and Sebastian P. Musco Center for the Arts. I look forward to helping complete the critically important initial phase of our Harry and Diane Rinker Health Science Campus. It also is gratifying for me to serve my final year as president in planning our new Center for Science and Technology and its groundbreaking scheduled to take place next April. Our progress with these transformational projects, along with our critically important advances in scholarship and research, illuminates the remarkable momentum taking place everywhere at Chapman. Following the transition, I look forward to returning to teaching and research as well as helping Daniele and serving Chapman in any way that I can. Meantime, there is much to be done during the rest of this academic year—the 155th year in the life of Chapman University. It is exciting and fulfilling for me to continue to work together with what I believe is the greatest team in higher education, serving the university that I cherish.

Chapman University Anderson Center
April 11, 2016
From the office of Chapman University President. DATE: April 9, 2016 TO: The Chapman Community FROM: Jim Doti I regret to report the passing of our friend and colleague, Professor Essie Adibi. He passed away on Friday, peacefully and with his family at his side, from complications due to a massive stroke. As I try to come to terms with the passing of my closest friend, it's really difficult for me to imagine my life or that of the university without him. The power of his personality, wisdom and intellect was so much a part of our community. He was one of our brightest stars. Before Essie went on to complete his Ph.D. at Claremont Graduate University, he received his MBA at Chapman in 1976. He was among my first graduate students, and I will always remember him as one of my most perceptive and gifted researchers. Essie went on to become a professor of economics here at Chapman, where he held the A. Gary Anderson Chair in Economic Analysis and was Director of the A. Gary Anderson Center for Economic Research. Essie was beloved by his students because of his genius for explaining the thorniest of economic subjects with wit and wisdom. He loved working with his students in preparing and updating the Chapman Econometric Model. In the wider community, Essie was perhaps best known as the genial and intellectual presenter of the Chapman Economic Forecasts over the last 38 years -- the longest-running forecast in the nation. These forecasts grew to be widely trusted by business people and media outlets throughout the nation. Indeed, the Chapman forecasts were recently cited for the highest degree of forecast accuracy among the Blue Chip Forecasts over the last 10 years. Essie co-authored the widely used textbook Econometric Analysis: An Applications Approach, as well as The Practice of Econometrics with EViews. His articles were published in many professional journals, including International Advances in Economic Research and The Quarterly Journal of Business and Economics. He also contributed frequently to local and national news stories on the economy. Essie's involvement in the private and public sectors was extraordinary. He was past president of the Association for University Business and Economic Research and a member of the NABE Outlook Survey Panel and Western Blue Chip Economic Forecast Panel. He served on the California Treasurer's Council of Economic Advisors and was particularly proud of his distinguished service on the board of directors of SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union. Over the years, Essie was a mainstay in the Argyros School of Business and Economics. Dean Reggie Gilyard recently told me, "Essie was an important advisor to me as I transitioned from the private sector to the world of academia. Up until his final days in the office, I was learning from Essie." That was certainly one of Essie's special attributes. He helped so many people in so many ways. As Chapman PR director Mary Platt told me yesterday, "I can't believe he's gone. Such a force of intelligence, good humor and humanity; such a vital figure in the fabric and history of Chapman." Essie is survived by his wife Jila, daughter Roxanne, son Keeya and grandchildren Nicholas and Alexander. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 16 at 11 a.m. in the Wallace All Faiths Chapel in the University's Fish Interfaith Center. Donations in Essie's memory can be made to the Adibi Family International Scholarship Fund at Chapman that he established many years ago and where he donated the honorariums he received for his many public speaking engagements. As we reflect on the loss of our friend and colleague, I wish to leave you with the words of my assistant, Dorothy Farol, when she heard the sad news: "Essie was more than a friend.; he was an amazing person. His passing will not only leave a void in our lives, but in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will always be deep within our hearts."

Chapman University Department of Public Safety

Pokémon Go: Stay safe while having fun The world seems to be going crazy for Pokémon Go. We want you enjoy this great game but at the same time please be safe and use the same safety tips that you would with regular campus activities at Chapman. Our Chapman public safety and information security teams have some safety tips below for you: • Some Pokémon will randomly appear in dangerous locations. Users need to realize when one is out of reach and not risk their safety to retrieve it. • Some Pokémon appear on private property. Users should not trespass for game playing purposes • Users can be overly focused on the screen and become oblivious to their surroundings. Be aware of who and what are around you. Do not drive distracted. • Pokestops are certain focal points to attract more users. Predators can stake out at or near a Pokestop and commit crimes against other users. This goes back to being aware of your surroundings. It is best to visit Pokestops at day time, with a friend or in a group. • Pokegyms are other prominent locations where users can meet and battle. By design, you are there to meet and play against other users. Again going in a group and being aware of your surroundings is a good strategy. • Be aware of phishers using Pokémon Go logos to send you malicious phish email about your Pokémon account. This will come to you as phish emails informing you about account resets or account lockouts asking you to urgently divulge personal information or download attached malicious files. Our Chapman campus has plenty of public landmarks, fountains, statues, etc. that will attract many users from the general public onto our campuses. Use the above tips and stay safe and we hope you catch many Pokémon!

Hey "friends"! What are YOU doing this summer? Lindsey Trujillo '17, Communication Studies major with a minor in Advertising, spent summer '16 interning at Warner Bros TV, and in summer '15, Lindsey was interning at Fox Studios as a Publicity & Corporate Communications Intern. 📽📺 "I have been fortunate to have had some amazing internships during my time at Chapman University! My favorite one by far was last summer, when I worked as a Social Media Marketing Intern for Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Marketing! Being able to work on a studio lot and see where all my favorite shows were filmed was surreal. As a Social Media intern, I helped my supervisors run Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter pages for various TV shows by creating posts, writing content, and coming up with creative marketing ideas! I also was able to help with projects for Comic Con San Diego 2016. This role was all about strategically communicating messages about Warner Bros. TV shows to fans, and my supervisors were really impressed with how well Chapman School of Comm.'s program prepared me to take on that role!... At Fox, having a background knowledge of media issues such as news framing, agenda setting, and how media affects public opinion helped me critically think about the work I was doing. (Sound interesting? Take the class, 'Issues in Mass Communication'!)" What are you doing this summer? Comment below, or better yet, submit your photo and blurb to be an intern spotlight.... we'll send you some goodies to help you celebrate! 🎉 #regram thanks to Chapman School of Comm.

Chapman University - Marriage & Family Therapy Program

Meet Abigail Tabula (Class of 2016) and hear about her experience in the MFT Program at Chapman University . . . "With just a mere couple of weeks left in the Frances Smith Center, I feel very fortunate to look back on my experience as a whole in Chapman's MFT graduate degree program with lots of gratitude filling my heart and a huge smile on my face. Attending Chapman to pursue my Master's degree has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. Not only was it the state-of-the-art training facility and equipment, but it was the ambition, support, and encouragement from the program's faculty, supervisors, and administrators, as well as fellow colleagues, that made this training experience as thorough, efficient, and meaningful as it was. I'll always appreciate the guidance and encouragement of everyone I've met through the program. I truly feel with all the learning through classes, outside trainings, clinic workshops, and supervision that I was able to develop and grow my competence and professionalism to carry out my passion for helping others. I feel that I am leaving with more awareness and preparedness for my future as a clinician working in the mental health field and working with a variety of populations. And last but not least, I couldn't have gotten through the past three years without the camaraderie and sense of belonging I found with my amazing cohort. I'm forever grateful for the program administration that put together this special group of people to journey through this chapter of our lives together. It's been an awesome ride with them by my side, and I can't wait to see what amazing things we will do as we venture out beyond the Crean Hall building walls and establish our challenging and fulfilling careers."
