#SummerOfScience: Wenzhao Li, a PhD student in the Computational and Data Sciences program working with Prof. Hesham El-Askary, is spending his summer as a research intern in the National Supercomputer Center in Jinan (NSCCJN). NSCCJN is one of six national supercomputing centers in China. It was ranked as # 13 in the TOP-500 fastest supercomputers in the world when it was first launched in 2011. Wenzhao is running Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model in the NSCCJN #supercomputer to dynamically downscale validated atmospheric data to high horizontal resolution with a time span matching the power outage data. #ChapmanSciences #ScienceSelfieCU

The Writing Center offers in-person and online tutoring for all students from first year to graduate level. Tutors can assist with general questions about writing, using citation systems, drafting application essays, finding resources, preparing presentations, and other types of writing assignments in any discipline. Additionally, students can submit papers online and receive an emailed response from a tutor within 48 hours. The Tutoring, Learning, and Testing Center is located in DeMille Hall; hours for spring 2015 are 9am-5pm Mondays and Wednesdays, 9am-6pm Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 9am-4pm on Fridays. For Throwback Thursday, I thought I’d share a photo of me taken just before I presented the First Annual Forecast Conference at Chapman in 1978. This year’s forecast will take place on December 3 at the Segerstom Concert Hall and is #37 – the longest running forecast presented by the same two guys (Essie and yours truly) in the world!!! By the way, notice how working with Essie for 37 consecutive years has prematurely aged me. Please also notice how I was a fashion-plate then just as I am now. JLD

Here’s one for “Throwback Thursday” that dates back to 1997. It’s a photo taken of me and Chapman trustees on an antique auto buying mission. Starting from the left we have Harry Rinker, Doy Henley, yours truly and Don Sodaro. While I was along for the ride, Don bought that beautiful ’33 Packard shown behind us in the photo. Maybe I can get him to drive in Santa Claus at Doy’s Winterfest party on December 4 at the Attallah Piazza. At that Winterfest, we will light up Dee the Panther and officially bring in the holiday season. JLD
