Every spring the major award-granting agencies open the application process for students who wish to compete for some of the most prestigious awards available – Truman, Fulbright, Rhodes, Goldwater, and Marshall, to name a few. Dr. Eileen Jankowski, Director of Fellowships and Scholar Programs, will be conducting several information sessions during the spring semester to provide further details and answer your questions about these programs. Interested students should plan on attending at least one of the information sessions during the semester. Keep an eye out for more information in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you are encouraged to contact Dr. Eileen Jankowski (jankowsk@chapman.edu) or go to the Fellowship website (http://www.chapman.edu/students/fellowships/index.aspx) for more information.

“My three months summer internship with City National Bank enhanced my knowledge and insight into the banking industry. Throughout my internship I created excel-based reports for the Regional Managers to manage and supervise the branch managers’ performances and their projected portfolios. The reports included pivot tables, v-lookups, and other excel functions that we learned in our Business Analytics Class. The most important aspect for me was building good relationships with excellent managers and employees within the financial services industry. Equity Research and Investment Banking are two career paths that I would like to pursue. My internship with City National Bank helped me connect with outstanding professionals, who provided me with a better insight of what it is like to work in this industry.” Bassam Nicolas Helou, MBA '15, from Lebanon, BS in Banking, Corporate, Finance, and Securities Law, Intern at City National Bank in Los Angeles #ChapmanMBA #MBAsummer #SummerInternship #MBAintern #TakeBoldSteps

Here I am with our Phonathon students last night. I was challenged by them to see if I could raise more Phonathon money for our Chapman Fund than what they could collect during a 30 minute competition. If I lost, I would have to pay the difference between what the students raised less whatever I raised. In the competition, I went ahead with a $100 gift, but a student quickly followed up with $500. Down by $400 and only one minute to go, I called a person in my list named Rev. Neil Edlin who was one of the few to actually answer the phone. The good Reverend came through with a very generous gift of $1,000 to put me over the top with a score of $1,100 for Doti and $500 for the students. Yeah for Rev. Edlin!!! JLD

Now that the frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday has passed, many of you may be preparing to give to your favorite charitable organizations before the year ends. Please consider including the College of Performing Arts in your 2014 giving plans. Your support directly impacts our ability to cover production costs for our students to deliver top-notch community performances of classic and contemporary art; recruitment of world-renowned artists for life-changing master classes that develop and inspire; and scholarships and travel funds for our student touring ensembles, competitions and conferences. All of this translates into students who graduate with the kind of performing and teaching experiences they need to immediately begin their careers in the performing arts! To learn more about how you can become an active supporter of the arts here at Chapman, please visit the link below. Thank you! #GivingTuesday

Here is a photo of Dr. Marilyn Harran and Holocaust survivor Jack Pariser following the conclusion of one of my favorite Chapman events: The 16th Annual Holocaust Art & Writing Contest. This year 7,000+ students participated in the contest, one hailing from Shanghai, China and another from Slovakia. Kudos to Dr. Harran for all she has done to bring to our students and larger community the lessons to be learned from the Holocaust. At the event, Jack Pariser gave a moving keynote address on his experience during the Holocaust and what we should do to prevent current and future genocides. At the end of his eloquent address, he had us all chanting: “Do no harm; do no harm; do no harm.” JLD

Meet Lori Breeden-Gomez, MS, LMFT, LPCC, Clinical Supervisor at the Chapman University - Frances Smith Center. Lori utilizes Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in her clinical practice. Here are her thoughts on this clinical model . . . "The goal of TF-CBT is to help address the biopsychosocial needs of children with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or other problems related to traumatic life experiences, and their parents or primary caregivers. TF-CBT is a model of psychotherapy that combines trauma-sensitive interventions with cognitive behavioral therapy. Children and parents are provided knowledge and skills related to processing the trauma; managing distressing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors; and enhancing safety, parenting skills, and family communication. TF-CBT lasts from 12 to 16 sessions." Lori is in private practice in Brea, CA and sees children, families, couples, and individuals.

Last night, we played “Jeopardy” at the Argyros Forum Student Union. I competed against Dean Jerry Price and the student finalists Tessa Lepore and Tansu Philip. I’m pleased to announce that I won for the second year in a row. Sorry for the bragging, but as a long time Jeopardy fan, this is a pretty heady stuff, at least for me. But the really big, big news is that Tansu Philip tried out for College Jeopardy. I’m pleased to announce that Tansu made it in the initial test and interview part. Now she’s waiting to hear whether she’ll become a contestant. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed. My recurring dream is that one of our students is on Jeopardy wearing a Chapman sweatshirt and beats the one wearing a USC shirt. Wouldn’t that be sweet!!!! JLD Left to right: Tessa, Dean Jerry Price, yours truly and Tansu.
