Happy #SweetheartSunday! Meghan (O'Brien) Taylor (J.D. ’09) married Hunter Taylor (J.D. ’07) on January 3, 2009 in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. The couple met at Chapman’s Fowler Law School. Their love story according to Meghan: “I signed up for Professor Howe's criminal law study group my first year of law school and met the third-year student who was leading our group, Hunter. I thought he was cute, so I paid attention closely, and criminal law was my highest grade that semester! By the time I graduated, Hunter and I were married. We now live in Old Towne Orange with our three-year-old son.” Alumni in the wedding party included Austin Holt ’08 (who married Meghan’s sister in 2011).

These alumni aren't playing around! The gaming industry continues to transform, creating opportunities not only for developers, but professionals in variety of industries, including legal. 🕹📜 Jack Anderson (JD ’15) and Kaitlin Peterson (JD/MBA ’16) are associate counsels at Irvine-based Blizzard Entertainment, a game developer and publisher best known for World of Warcraft and Overwatch. They found their way to the company after taking a course on video game law occasionally offered at Chapman University Fowler School of Law taught by adjunct professor Eric Roeder, Blizzard’s general counsel. In addition to Anderson and Peterson, dozens of fellow Panthers currently reside on the Blizzard team. So proud to have been a part of @chapmanu's Clotheslines Project. Here's a bit about the project: Chapman University’s Clothesline Project began in 1995. Since that time, we have collected 700+ shirts that have been made by students, staff, and faculty members. Our Clothesline differs from the original Project in a few ways: • We have included boys and men in our project. More male survivors of sexual abuse are coming forward. Generally, the perpetrator of male sexual violence is also male. • We have also included advocacy shirts for members of the community to send a message of solidarity that speaks out against ALL violent behavior. The History of Clothesline “The Clothesline Project is a national project that serves as a visual depiction of violence against women, bearing witness to this epidemic in our communities. The project consists of color-coded shirts created by survivors and/or significant others who have directly and personally experienced the effects of sexual violence. Established in 1990 by the Cape Cod women’s Agenda in Hyannis, MA, the Clothesline Project has four stated goals: 1. To bear witness to the survivors and to ‘remember’ those who have died as a result of violence against women. 2. To help with the healing process for those who have directly and personally been affected by violence against women. 3. To educate, document, and raise society’s awareness of the extent of the problem of violence against women. 4. To provide a nationwide network of support, encouragement, and information for other communities starting their own Clothesline Project.” I would also suggest adding #TheGirlWhoFell by @shannonparkerwrites to your tbr list as it explores issues relating to this project. #ConsentGetSome #ItsOnUs

A note from Dr. Amy Graziano, Chair & Professor in The Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music: As you read last week, it is with great sadness that I report that one of our colleagues, Michael Martin, passed away recently. Michael was Associate Professor of Music and taught at Chapman full-time from 1984 - 2006. For most of his time at Chapman he was the only composition instructor. He ran the composition division, taught composition, Music Theory III and IV and Music History III and IV. Michael was one of the smartest, most knowledgeable people I have ever known. He was very well-read in philosophy and all sorts of obscure literature, he could recite the libretto to most of the entire Ring Cycle from memory, and he had eclectic musical taste—once I had a conversation with him where he talked enthusiastically about Wagner and then suddenly switched to an equally enthusiastic discussion about Björk. He knew so much about quirky, non-American films and their music that I asked him to guest lecture in my film music class for many years (even after he retired). I still talk about him as an example in my introductory music history class for music majors (Compendium) when I get to the 20th century: after explaining Serialism, I describe how Michael told me he could hear all the transformations of a tone row in an unfamiliar Serial work during the first listening. Michael also had a private piano studio and taught the child prodigy Kit Armstrong (prodigy both on piano and in composition). I know those of us who knew him will miss his humor and his knowledge. Michael is survived by his wife, Jessica. Information about the service this coming Saturday (1/14/17) can be found at this link: http://obits.dignitymemorial.com/dignity-memorial/obituary.aspx?n=Michael-Martin&lc=5358&pid=183302575&uuid=46b0119f-f1c4-4df1-acfb-168b5c4ae9c4

The Vagina Monologues were born in the 1990’s when a woman named Eve Ensler came to realize that women were very rarely given the opportunity to freely talk about their experiences as women. She began by taking to the streets of New York, asking random women questions such as “If your vagina could talk, what would it say?” or “What would your vagina wear?” Through asking these seemingly bizarre yet simple questions, Ensler found that she was able to gain insight of the inner lives and experiences of the women she viewed and how they felt about their experiences as women. She took these women’s stories and turned them into a series of monologues. The show quickly became a hit sensation and people began to flock to the theatre doors only to be turned away from continuously sold out performances due to the show’s great success. Ensler now releases the rights to the show to colleges and communities around the globe with the only requirement that all proceeds go towards an organization with a mission to help women. This year, the proceeds of Chapman University’s 2015 production of The Vagina Monologues will be going to Human Options, a sanctuary for women and children who have experienced domestic abuse. The focus of Chapman University’s 2015 production is freedom, for we believe that feminism means having the freedom to make your own choices, to live your life the way you choose, and to be free of the institutionalized violence and abuse that takes place in our world today. To show our support for one another, casts of The Vagina Monologues will hold up their “V” as a salute to show that we stand by each other in our own searches for freedom from whatever holds us down. The show will take place on March 6th, 7th, and 8th, and we invite everyone to come and free their own V.
