Chapman University - Marriage & Family Therapy Program
May 5, 2017
Meet Adam Furtado, MA, LMFT, Adjunct Professor in the MFT Program at Chapman University . . . "After graduating with my Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Sociology, I felt a desire to work in the health and human services field. My first job included working with teens in a residential treatment setting. The teens that I met were often in the foster care system and struggled with histories of poverty, abuse, neglect, homelessness, and often were dealing with lifelong mental health challenges. This was a population that was very demanding and challenging, but in so much need of quality services and support. Although I learned a lot while working within the group and milieu setting, I knew that my impact could be greater in a more individualized modality. I decided to pursue my Master's degree in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy. My graduate program was exactly what I wanted, and I gained the additional skills and confidence to be able to continue to serve disadvantaged and at-risk youth, but within individualized psychotherapy. I now had the tools and opportunity to make an increased impact in the lives of the clients that I serve. All of my professional work to date has been working with low-income children and families, and many struggle with the same types of challenges that I initially encountered when entering the field almost 15 years ago. Having the privilege to assist disadvantaged minority communities is one of the best parts of my job. I am now a clinical supervisor at a nonprofit mental health clinic in Long Beach. I get to help cultivate the clinical skills of other therapists who share this same passion, and it is so much fun to see the creativity, energy, and commitment that these therapists have. I started teaching at Chapman in 2017, and I find it incredibly rewarding to continue to encounter so many people who have a desire to help others, improve lives, and make a difference in their communities."

The Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music
January 11, 2017
A note from Dr. Amy Graziano, Chair & Professor in The Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music: As you read last week, it is with great sadness that I report that one of our colleagues, Michael Martin, passed away recently. Michael was Associate Professor of Music and taught at Chapman full-time from 1984 - 2006. For most of his time at Chapman he was the only composition instructor. He ran the composition division, taught composition, Music Theory III and IV and Music History III and IV. Michael was one of the smartest, most knowledgeable people I have ever known. He was very well-read in philosophy and all sorts of obscure literature, he could recite the libretto to most of the entire Ring Cycle from memory, and he had eclectic musical taste—once I had a conversation with him where he talked enthusiastically about Wagner and then suddenly switched to an equally enthusiastic discussion about Björk. He knew so much about quirky, non-American films and their music that I asked him to guest lecture in my film music class for many years (even after he retired). I still talk about him as an example in my introductory music history class for music majors (Compendium) when I get to the 20th century: after explaining Serialism, I describe how Michael told me he could hear all the transformations of a tone row in an unfamiliar Serial work during the first listening. Michael also had a private piano studio and taught the child prodigy Kit Armstrong (prodigy both on piano and in composition). I know those of us who knew him will miss his humor and his knowledge. Michael is survived by his wife, Jessica. Information about the service this coming Saturday (1/14/17) can be found at this link: http://obits.dignitymemorial.com/dignity-memorial/obituary.aspx?n=Michael-Martin&lc=5358&pid=183302575&uuid=46b0119f-f1c4-4df1-acfb-168b5c4ae9c4

Chapman Business Report
May 29, 2015
The Chapman-Anderson Center gurus predicted 1Q would be very soft, perhaps not -0.7%. That's the revision to 1Q 2015 "growth." The culprits are consensus: foremost the horrible weather that gripped most of the country; secondarily falling oil prices which are shaving jobs and revenues from the oil and gas business, especially the shale folks. Now like most statistics on the economy, GDP is a figure seen through the rearview mirror. The bad weather is largely gone, those lower oil prices--albeit higher today--will put anywhere from $500- $750/year extra in consumers' pockets, now that they can get to the mall. Good news: Big-ticket consumer items are still flying out of showrooms: Car dealers and new-home trailers. And joblessness is at a recovery low; despite some troubling anecdotal evidence from the likes of JP Morgan Chase cutting 5,000 jobs and local publishers like Brea-based PennySaver closing their doors after fifty years. We'll move the analysis of this latest spate of mergers to Monday. Enjoy the weekend. Let's go Ducks and Rangers!

Happy #SweetheartSunday! Robyn (Humphries) Britt ’99 married William Sean Britt ’98 on September 3, 2000 at The Pierpont in Ventura, Calif. The couple met at Monte Vista Middle School in Camarillo, Calif. Their love story according to Robyn: “William (goes by Sean) and I actually met in junior high, and went to junior high and high school together. We were acquainted, but not close friends. Sean graduated a year before me and I knew he went to Chapman, but didn't keep in touch. One day, walking through Argyros, I ran into Sean as he was eating. I was a freshman and he was a sophomore. We associated with the same group and would see each other at social events occasionally. When I was a junior and Sean a senior, one of Sean's friends had a crush on me. They would come by a lot. Clueless as I was, I started to notice Sean, not his friend. Sean felt the same. Ever the gentlemen, Sean asked his friend if he could ask me out and his friend said yes. We started dating in 1998 and were married in 2000. We have been married for 15 years and have two boys, Ethan, 11, and Murphy, 4. We always say that if Sean's friend had said no, we would've been unable to date. So thank you, Josh, for saying yes.” Alumni in the wedding party included Sara (Pocock) Tisdell, Todd Tisdell, Chris Hacker and Josh Mikus-Mahoney.

Student Feature, Estelle Tigani, MBA '16: "I have been working at Fireforge Games for nearly two years now, starting off as a Production Intern and now as a Lead Producer on one of our projects. I have worked in a creative field since I finished my undergrad degree - including The Walt Disney Company - but chose to do an MBA to gain an appreciation for the business side of the entertainment industry. This is very important to me, because there are few people in the music, film, and games industries, who can understand both sides of the equation. As a producer I need to juggle meeting the creative standards of our projects as well as keeping within timelines and budgets. Sometimes, one side is not fair to the other, so to speak. My day-to-day tasks can range anywhere between creating pitch documents, hosting meetings, communicating with publishers, and making and tracking work schedules for teams. Video games have been the love of my life since I was a child, and I am proud to say that I have a career where I can wake up every morning and do what I love.” #ChapmanMBA #MBAFeature #PantherExcellence

One of the best decisions of my Chapman career thus far bas been taking part in Greek life. I rushed and joined Kappa my first semester of freshman year. Through it I have met so many incredible and strong women who I am so honored to call my sisters. And the reason I am a Kappa and I stuck with it is all because of one special vegan, my big @ktomay . She remembered me on bid day when I was nervous and unsure and here was are today (she also loves the jonas brothers and dancing awkwardly with me which are two major plusses)! Now I have a little of my own whom I adore and a God big who is the bomb. Pictured here is our entire Kappa extended family known as the #jambalayans. After a long day at the beach, my car getting towed, a near death free way accident, and a mexican food feast we all merged our individual families into one and became the #jambalayans. These ladies make Kappa feel like home and a happy place always. Much love to my fam💙 Stay tuned for my final day running the account holla! -Emily Biehl

This is my last post everyone, I wanted to share one thing with you to start the semester. Find something this semester that you can chase with passion for your entire life, separate what you have done for who you are, if you made a mistake, if you didn't do the right thing, move past it. I got lucky, I found out my "why" in life 3 years ago. I stopped waking up like life was an accident, I can wake up with purpose even though sometimes life can beat me down. If you were like me and you woke up and said this isn't what I talked about, this isn't what I dreamed about, you can still stand up to life. If you had a New Years resolution you didn't stick with, try again, it's a new month, you failed point the figure in the mirror and start again. If you had a relationship that didn't work out, acknowledge it and grow. You can't afford not to be you, to live life without passion, commit to something, drive with consistent action, it's your responsibility to make it happen. It's bigger than football, it's bigger than your classes it's YOUR LIFE, give it everything you have every moment of everyday, it's difficult and it's worth it. #mychapman #ChapmanUFamily #ProudtobeaPanther

Meet Tiffany Soria (Class of 2016) and hear about her experience as a student in the MFT program and an MFT Trainee in the Frances Smith Center. As a current student, I am so grateful for the education and training that I have received from the MFT program. My professors and supervisors have created an environment in which I have been able to gain valuable experience in the MFT field while feeling supported. The experience that I have been able to gain in the Francis Smith Center has allowed me to work with various populations. When I first started in this program, I was unsure about which populations I hoped to work with after graduate school. While I am now interested in several clinical populations, my experience in the clinic has helped me realize that I am passionate about working with college students. The transition that young adults go through during college is one that can be difficult at times, and I hope to work in a college setting in which I can support and empower these students during this transition. While I am still constantly learning in the clinic, I am already so appreciative of the guidance and support that I have received throughout my time in the MFT program at Chapman University.
