Chapman University's Office of the President

Still waiting for my Boston Marathon photos. My iPhone lost all its juice, so I couldn’t take photos along the way. But the following was taken by Phill Gross whose office is on the 52nd floor of Hancock Tower. His daughter, Jessica, was accepted to become a Chapman student this fall. Phil called to invite me after the race to take a hot shower. Since Hancock Tower is half a block from the finish line, how could I refuse? He even come to my hotel to pick up a change of clothes for me. When he asked what drink he should have waiting for me, I said a shot of “Maker's Mark Bourbon.” It was cold and rainy with a head wind the whole way but thinking of that hot shower and shot of “Maker’s Mark” kept me going. This photo was taken at “Phill’s 19th Hole.” Here’s a photo of all the Boston finishers. That’s me with Kelly Gross (Phill’s daughter), Liz Gross (Phill’s wife) and family friend, Julie Zavrl, who ran to raise funds for homeless shelter in Boston. As should be obvious, this photo was taken post-shower for all four of us. JLD

Student Feature, Jennifer Lee, MBA '16: "I accepted a summer internship with DIRECTV at their corporate office in El Segundo as their graduate finance intern. My internship primarily focused on financial analytics for DIRECTV, but expanded into learning about SOX compliances (Sarbanes Oxley) and Internal Controls & Compliance, when the AT&T / DIRECT merger occurred in July 2015. My internship was extended until the end of 2015, which gave me the opportunity to sit in on multiple meetings with AT&T and DIRECTV executives, help with parts of the acquisition, and report directly to executives and directors for both companies. My internship was a great experience that allowed me to apply many things I had learned in class in a corporate setting and to network with multiple C-suite and high-level executives. This internship introduced me to corporate life in a Fortune 50 and Fortune 100 company as well as helped me realize where and how I would like to utilize my MBA in the short and long term." #ChapmanMBA #MBAFeature #PantherExcellence

Schmid College Science Forum April 19, 2017: "What Proteins Can Tell Us About Climate Change" with Lars Tomanek , Ph.D., Associate Professor at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Biology Summary: Proteins play an important role in an organism’s response to environmental change and shifts in their abundances can tell us a lot about the underlying cellular processes involved in the determining the tolerance to a stressor. Marine organisms experience several environmental stressors, such as temperature, hypoxia, changes in salinity and pH, simultaneously. Using mussels and crabs to study the cellular stress response, we discovered the ubiquitous importance of oxidative stress and several biochemical pathways to reduce the production of reactive oxygen species as a common response to all stressors, but also identified cellular processes, such as those involving ion regulation, as being specific to a single stressor, such as pH stress. Comparisons between species with different stress tolerances provide insights into the possible “winners” and “losers” of climate change. This lecture will be held in the Bush Conference Center, Beckman Hall room 404 on Chapman University's campus in Orange, Ca. Science Forum lectures are free ad open to all.

As a joint JD/MBA student, time is your biggest enemy (along with the inability to clone oneself). However, last year I decided to put law aside and endeavor into my MBA side as a Private Equity Intern for Five Crowns Capital. This internship taught me more than just drafting financial models and formulating projections and gave me the opportunity to interact in meetings with seller-clients and investors. I gained insight into what attracts investors, while building on client needs. I was even able to display my legal skills by introducing possible issues that might arise during transaction processes. Interning with Five Crowns Capital taught me the importance of fostering my knowledge, while maintaining the flexibility and integrity to grow more knowledge. With this understanding, I have been able to excel in my current internship as an In-House Law Clerk with Pacific Premier Bank, Inc. As a Law Clerk, I am constantly drafting contracts and performing entity reviews, which requires both business and legal skills. However, rather than seeing this new endeavor as a challenge, I see it as an opportunity to grow and master a new skill, which will only benefit my career. I hope to one day take these years of growth and progress and apply it as my foundation of skills as a Mergers & Acquisitions attorney. This is open to ALL Chapman students! **Over the past week, we have received feedback from students regarding the 50 Shades of Grey screening. We deeply value this feedback and have since decided to adapt our program to address the topics, which include the film’s depiction of the BDSM (bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism), consent, sexual assault, and abusive relationships. UPB will be providing resources and further information on these issues during the program. Until then, please see below for some articles offering additional perspectives on the messages behind 50 Shades of Grey. Student Feature, Ryan Lim, MBA '17: "I am one of the new interns at Atlas Entertainment and so far my time at Atlas has been incredible! It’s been such a great opportunity to get acquainted with the industry and the environment while getting to meet a ton of accomplished people. During lunch breaks, we’ve had a few opportunities to talk to some of the more experienced executives of the company and they have imparted some of their knowledge onto us. A big part of my job involves script coverage and development. I think the things I learned in both the MBA and the Professional Development Program have really helped me out while on the job. Through my MBA classes, I’ve grown to appreciate the numbers and the financial side of the entertainment industry. Because the classes were geared towards traditional business, I always asked the professors how this is applicable to film and television. Every professor was willing to break it down for me and help translate it into my industry of interest. Combined with the skills I picked up in PDP, I’m able to contribute valuable input during conversations with assistants and executives about the viability of a script both creatively and financially." #ChapmanMBA #MBAFeature #PantherExcellence

Chapman Business Report
August 15, 2014
That's a big number in the jobs-deficit column in one month, 13,900. But here's a case where numbers do lie, or belie Orange County's healthy economy. Almost all of the jobs losses in July came in the government sector, most of those in education as schools went into summer recess. Look for big gains there in August and September (Start dates in K-12, secondary education in California are all over the lot). OC posted some gains in its jobs-leader, sector of leisure and hospitality and some losses in construction (-1,100). But that key segment is up 3,900 jobs or 5% this year--welcome sign. California and the U.S. posted a similar loss of jobs, and tick up in the jobless rate in July. Chapman's economists are still calling for as many as 40,000 new jobs here in the next two years. We finish on a cautionary note on the export front--the forecasts of Europe's recovery seem to have been exaggerated. The economies of both Germany and Italy shrank in 2Q, and Portugal’s woes have been well chronicled. Culprits are the inability to enact structural reforms in countries like Italy, and the impact of the Ukraine crisis on export-economies like Germany’s.

Please see below for several fall highlights, and check the library’s website or follow us on Facebook for up-to-date information as the semester continues. The series of events begins this Tuesday at 9 a.m. Join Dean Baldwin and Chancellor Struppa for a celebration to kick off this anniversary year. Stop by the reference desk to find out more about library resources and to pick up library giveaways. Be sure to come by early—the first 500 people to visit the library will get a cupcake.

Chapman University - Marriage & Family Therapy Program
May 4, 2015
Meet Heather Hargis, MS, LMFT, Clinical Supervisor in the Francis Smith Center at Chapman University and hear about her passion for helping clients heal from trauma . . . "I am passionate about working with clients who have experienced trauma. Survivors have incredible strength, courage, stamina and moxy. Exploring and reflecting these traits help begin the process of empowerment. By gently challenging clients to reignite that passion for life they once had, and choosing how they want to live their lives today, it instills hope. Finding ways to redirect their strengths from symptom management towards positive coping skills, problem solving skills and improving self-esteem, all lead to their goal of healing. One of my favorite things is to teach clients “that was then and this is now.” Though a simple concept, it takes intense focus, practice in mindfulness and grounding techniques to learn to use this coping strategy. Every day events can be triggers where they may re-experience traumatic feelings at any time. Learning to balance and manage these intense physiological and emotional responses can be a tremendous feat. Through treatment, I’ve often seen the most growth in this population. Many clients are stronger as they incorporate their work from therapy and regain a sense of control in their lives. As a therapist, as well as a supervisor, it is a true honor to be part of a person’s journey in this process."
